100% to all of this. I’m a big fan of “good enough” and Taco Tuesday. More versions of this I’ve discovered:
- season tickets to our local civic center means we have six built in date nights a year where we don’t have to decide how to spend them
- I lease the same car over and over, I just upgrade to the newest model and whatever color is available when my lease expires (going on over a decade of this, much faster than the torture process of buying a car and it comes with free oil changes)
- “uniforms” for frequent occasions. I wear a version of the same outfit when I travel, to the gym, and to church.
This is reminiscent of the "Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***" and the need for us to all decide based on our values what should matter most and let everything else just kind of be someone else's bigger concern. Thank you for the reinforcement and reminder that good enough is almost always ok, unless its one of the things I value and love!
I need an "easy button" list because this concept is genius! I'm wracking my brain to identify where I already do this in my life.
One example that comes to mind is grocery shopping; I never shop in person anymore, I just do pickup orders. On the app I just "add to cart" my previous order over and over again. By consistently ordering the same items, we naturally eat the same meals on a regular basis. But because there’s so much variety in our lives on weekends and special occasions, it never feels boring or repetitive. I do add in season fruit, but that only needs to change up a couple times a year.
I once knew a woman who took this approach with clothing shopping. She would only shop at one store, and over the years, the staff got to know her so well that they would call whenever new items arrived that fit her style and set them aside. Talk about an easy button!
Love simplicity! Amazing suggestions! Less brain power spent on what to wear and eat allows me to spend time being creative elsewhere. Very Steve Jobs approach! Thanks for sharing! 🙌
Yes! I used to bend over backwards to make elaborate things -- cake from scratch?! why?? -- and have since realized no one cares if it's cake from a box.
I SO needed to read this today along with all the thoughtful comments. My life feels a bit out of balance right now as I juggle being a caregiver for my Mom (she moved in with us recently), an attentive wife, friend, employee (just started a new role which has me feeling uncomfortable) and dog mom to an aging pet. It’s so much to handle and just when I think I am doing it all well - well, things turn topsy turvy. Oddly enough, I had one of those Easy Buttons gifted to me many years ago. It needs to be brought out of a drawer and have a more prominent place in my life as a gentle reminder that good is good enough.

These are awesome suggestions Emily! I love your date night idea and "uniform"!

Excellent reminder!
I love this and am absolutely in favor of easy options. Given how many things inherently aren't, why not simplify the rest?
