I love this! I often tell people to pick the closest reasonable nursing home/senior care facility for their parents. Same principle! Being able to go three times a week is worth much more than new carpets.

This is my number one tip for anyone with a big family--live as close as possible to school. We are less than a mile from our both schools (a private K-8 and a public high school) and it makes such a difference! The kids have a short bus ride and it's much more manageable to attend events , drop off forgotten lunches, and socialize with other families there. Carpooling helps things even more!

On my recent Gratitude List: the gas station two blocks away, which is consistently one of the cheapest in my entire city, just installed brand new pumps that work without cuttting off too early. A small, big thing

I found the wisdom in this after moving to the suburbs, which for us is only 10 minutes from the city. So we don’t feel like we are far out from the restaurants, entertainment, etc, but we are now within 5 minutes of our gym, two gas stations, a coffee shop, grocery store, decent sushi, Mexican and two ice cream shops. It really does make everything feel much more convenient. And bonus we are 3 minutes away (and walkable) to the school our kids attend. I know people knock the suburbs but for this time in our life it’s a real plus on time savings.

Wow, this sounds like a great suburb! We made the opposite decision for similar reasons - moving to the nearest reasonable suburb would change the commute from 25-30 min to 60-120 minutes (depending on time of day), adding hours of commuting time each day.

They do say West Des Moines is the best Des Moines! If Des Moines is your thing. 🤣 We still can’t believe this little area exists and we get to live in it. Definitely feel really grateful for the convenience.

We live in a rural area, near a very nice little town, with a 10-15 minute drive into town. A few years ago, a new Dollar General was built out here. I mean, it’s less than five minutes from my house! At first, I rolled my eyes at it because they’re everywhere. Then, my family realized how many staples they had to offer like the coffee we drink (!), milk, eggs, bread, and dog treats. Oh! And, laundry detergent! Thank heavens they have laundry detergent! One day I ran in, because I forgot to stop in town (again!) for something (probably laundry detergent), and a lawyer friend of ours was doing the same. I asked him how often they go in there a week, and we both laughed because we probably go in there at least 3 times a week! We all scoffed at the DG when they were building it, but it sure is awfully convenient! And, now they even have some fresh produce available!
