I could not agree with you more, Laura! I also apply this to driving… if I know one route is always backed up at a certain time, I take the few-minutes-longer route to avoid sitting in traffic, and often to enjoy better scenery.

Waiting in lines is compounded here in Brazil, where it's a cultural thing to cut in line. The lines seem to magically grow and grow in front of me sometimes. And somehow I often manage to get to the front of the line and still be the last. So here, you either learn to cut in, make comments to those cutting in... or do everything humanly possible to not join lines.

In my area, TSA pre-check is so common that it is common to find the pre-check line longer than the regular TSA line. The pre-check line does move faster and even faster if you have Clear (it's a benefit from one of my credit cards). I'm team carry-on only but have recently discovered some people are passionate that everyone should be checking bags. I'm pretty confident those people only travel 2-3 times a year. I'm willing to go to great lenghts to avoid waiting in that scrum at the baggage carousel.

TSA precheck is great, but the process of getting it is not easy. You have to make appointments for finger printing and something else (don’t remember what) and the waiting time for those (the last time I checked) was 1-2 months, as appointments are booked. Then you get to go and wait in line there. Not to mention finding all the documents. For those of us that are not frequent flyers it’s not worth the hassle. (ie more waiting and more lines) As far as school pick up lines, I would think they could come up with a better solution.
